Hi... hope you can help me.

I am going skiing for the very first time at christmas but have struck a dilemma.... see the problem is that i wear glasses (to see distances - so unfortunately no option but to wear them :-( ) and i've been told that i need to get ski goggles for the trip. Will i now have to get prescription goggles / contacts or is there another way ( i am low on finances so the best cheapest solution is all i can afford)

Please help!

I'm an avid skier who has been skiing for many years.

I too wear glasses and have to when I ski.

My advice - DO NOT BUY OVER THE GLASSES GOGGLES (OTG)!!!!

I cannot stress this enough!!!

OTG goggles are an invention that was invented in the '80's when people wore HUGE glasses, just look through your mom's yearbook to see how big they were.

Truth is that people just don't wear glasses that big anymore.

Go to your neighbourhood ski shop and try on a few regular pairs, I'm pretty sure that you will have no problem finding a pair that will fit over your glasses anyway.

The biggest problem with OTG goggles is that they have thicker foam around the frame and it interferes with your periferal vision and if you're a beginner your periferal vision will be extemely important.

Trust me, don't go through what I had to go through for almost an entire ski season before I realized that a regular pair of goggles would fit over my glasses. My goggles are Spy Soldiers, but many others fit over my glasses too.

Good luck!

The above answers pretty much said it all. I used to wear glasses as well (I've had LASIK since then--yeah!). But when I used to wear glasses, I had goggles that fit over the glasses.

Just try on a bunch of pairs in a ski shop over your glasses. Don't worry about a label (OTG or whatever). Just try a bunch on and you find one that fits over them, and while trying them on, wear whichever hat you'll be wearing while skiing too, so you know it's the proper fit. Just make sure they are comfortable and you can still see well through them. Have fun!

EDIT: I'd also recommend buying some anti-fog stuff for your glasses and goggles. I kind of had a problem with them fogging up, but with the anti-fog stuff had no problems. They sell it in ski shops.

Hi!

I too, used to wear glasses (still do, but now I wear contacts skiing).

What you want to do is buy a pair of goggles that will fit over your glasses. Here is an example:

Look for the label "OTG", which I can only assume means Over The Glasses.

Alternative:

As a newbie, you will be in ski lessons, going relatively slowly. If it's not too cold out (where are you going skiing?), you likely won't even need goggles. You could just go with your glasses.

Goggles are used mostly to keep snow and wind from your eyes, both of which are problems at high speed. You should really be fine with just your glasses, unless it's really, really cold out.

Then you may not even want to be outside! Hot cocoa in the lodge is the best option then!!

Many goggle companies offer goggles that fit over your glasses, which would be much cheaper than prescription goggles. I don't wear glasses myself, so I've never tried any, but I hear the Smith Knowledge OTG is a pretty good goggle.

go to evo gear.com they have really cheap googles that would fit over your glasses you don't need special lenses unless you can actually ski moguls or park. If you know you will ski more than once buy googles that just have lenses there about 50$ or more. Having glasses on while skiing is kinda bad to because they can easily be scratched or damage under some googles. So i say special lenses

brands i would reccomand

scott or smith for newbies
